PTA Activities/Programs
Volunteers sign up through the electronic Angel Aides Form (the link can be found on the GA school website). The following are descriptions of the programs supported by the PTA.
• 365 Lotto (Laurie McCluskey, Katie Hadnett)
One of PTA’s biggest fundraisers! In conjunction with St. Joseph’s Consolidated, GA sells $20 tickets for a chance to win cash 365 days a year! Special bonus days each month payout larger amounts, up to $1000! Ticket sales run from Sept-Dec. The first ticket drawing is January 1. Great gift idea for Christmas, Birthdays, Teachers, etc!
• ANGEL AIDES/VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR (Dawn Feltman, Beth Smith)
PTA assists with this program to find persons to fulfill all the volunteer needs. These needs might include PTA activities, school activities, and assisting with classroom needs.
• ART SHOW (Carol Mackey and Rebecca Curran)
This annual event is coordinated by the art teachers. Volunteers are needed to help set up and take down art displayed at the show.
• BETTER BABYSITTING PROGRAM (Kathy Singleton)
The PTA offers babysitting classes to our 5th, 6th and 7th grades. Typically these classes occur once a week for four weeks. The students learn all important aspects of babysitting, as well as staying home alone, and receive a certificate upon completion of the course.
• BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION/ CAMPBELL’S SOUP LABELS (Bridget Fesenmeier and Katie Hadnett)
General Mills donates money to our school for each Box Top for Education we submit. And, for each Campbell’s Soup Label we submit, the PTA receives catalog points used to purchase products, especially playground equipment. Rewards are presented monthly and at the end of the year to the winning homerooms. More information including links to eligible products can be found on the GA school website.
• CAFETERIA PARENTS (Maureen Baker)
Responsibilities include wiping tables and assisting children during their lunches. You can work once or twice a month or more, from 11:20 AM to 1:00 PM. You are welcome to bring small children with you.
• CHRISTMAS EVENTS (Lauri Zahumensky, Beth Smith)
First, as a Christmas time thank you to all the specialty teachers, the administrative and support staff, the PTA creates cookie trays to give as gifts. Individuals are needed to bake cookies. As an additional thank you, the PTA collects monetary donations from the school families and presents these “specials” with Christmas gifts. Finally, before Christmas break, Santa comes to visit GA, gives each student a candy cane, and wishes all a “Merry Christmas”!
• CHRISTMAS TREE SALE (looking for a project leader)
This is an annual Christmas tree and wreath sale that takes place at GA during a weekend in early December. Volunteers are needed to cover the Friday – Sunday sale.
• CLASSROOM COORDINATORS (Jennifer Norrish with Jenifer Burt)
Every homeroom is assigned a coordinator. She/he is the primary contact for the teacher for volunteer needs during the school year. Parties in the classroom are organized by the coordinator, with activities and treats delegated to parent volunteers.
• COKE BOOTH – PARISH FESTIVAL ( )
The PTA operates two soft drink concession booths at the parish festival in June. Volunteers are needed to work Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for 2- hour shifts.
• EIGHTH GRADE GRADUATION
The PTA acknowledges all the 8th grade graduates with a monetary donation for graduation.
• EVERYBODY COUNTS ( )
Everybody Counts is a program designed to teach children about various handicaps and how children with these disabilities cope with them. The goal is to foster understanding.
• FASHION SHOW (DeAnn Fleming and Jen Huber)
At Angels on the Runway, a social event and dinner, local clothing stores show off their wares, modeled by GA teachers and parents. Volunteers are needed to set up, run stations during the event, and help with clean up. Donated gift baskets are raffled at the event.
• FIRE PREVENTION DAY ( )
Supported by the PTA, this program strives to educate the students on fire prevention and safety. Grades K-8 learn through demonstrations and presentations by local firemen.
• FISH FRY/BAKE SALE (Brie Schafer, Carol Christen)
The PTA organizes the Bake Sale at each Fish Fry during Lent (Fridays, 2/24-4/6). Volunteers are needed to supply the baked goods and to work the sale.
• GIFT CARD BAZAAR (Lauri Zahumansky)
It’s simple to support GA with our Gift Card Bazaar program — participating retailers agree to sell gift certificates to our organization at a discount. Parish families buy the certificates for full face value, they redeem them for full face value, and our school keeps the difference as revenue. A variety of cards are readily available and order forms can be found on the GA school website.
• KINDERGARTEN BUDDY PROGRAM (Bridget Fesenmeier)
Volunteers will be assigned to welcome and offer guidance to new GA families. There is a lot of new information for families to wade through, and the GA PTA would like to remove some of the confusion.
• KROGER CARD (Erin Fullerton)
GA issued Kroger gift cards are reloadable at any Kroger store and can be used for groceries, merchandise, and gas. GA receives 4 cents for every dollar loaded. All earnings from this program directly support the purchase of technology supplies for the school.
• MAD SCIENCE (Carmen Brunner)
Mad Science is a one hour after school program offered in the winter/spring for grades 1-4 in our own Science Lab. The trained instructors bring an exciting hands-on program that makes science fun and interesting focusing on a specific theme each session.
• MADNESS IN MARCH ( )
GA parents and parishioners are invited to vote on their picks for the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Prizes are awarded!
• MARKET DAY (Joanne McClellan, Erin Fullerton)
Market Day offers a variety of restaurant quality foods such as family meals, box lunch items, snacks, desserts, and more. Once a month, your ordered food is delivered to school for pick up on a Saturday. You can order using the form sent home with your child, or on-line at www.marketday.com. PTA earns a minimum of 10% of the purchase price. Volunteers are needed to place reminder phone calls and to help with set up/distribution.
• NEW FAMILY TEA (Bridget Fesenmeier)
This is an informal gathering intended for parents of new families to help answer questions and to provide them with additional information about Guardian Angels. We will discuss all aspects of school, from what your child will experience on a daily basis to extra-curricular activities as well as volunteer and social opportunities. We will give names to faces and be available as a resource throughout the school year.
• PENNY FAIR (Kathy Singleton, Beth Smith, Gina Hopple, and Lauri Zahumansky)
This all-school carnival is held at the school during Catholic Schools Week for the enjoyment and entertainment of the students and families. Many volunteers are needed to organize this event, to work the booths or sell refreshments the day of the fair and to help with set-up/cleanup.
• POINSETTIA SALE (Beth Smith)
This is an annual Christmas sale for the PTA. Order forms will be sent out in November. Volunteers are needed to assist on the pickup date.
• RECYCLE FORWARD (Patti Sutter, Carol Christen)
The PTA participates in this innovative program to earn new technology for the classrooms by recycling used electronics and ink cartridges.
• RED RIBBON WEEK (Beth Smith and Lauri Zahumansky)
This weeklong celebration takes a collective stand against underage use of alcohol and tobacco and all use of illegal drugs. The celebration is targeted toward elementary schools in order to encourage youths to make a commitment to a drug free lifestyle.
• SCHOOL TOOLBOX (Erin Fullerton)
PTA works with the individual teachers to create a school supply kit for purchase for the coming year. By purchasing your customized school supply kit, parents avoid the hassle of trying to locate hard to find items and know that your student will have exactly what their teacher wants on the first day of school. Kits are delivered to school for parents to pickup before school starts.
• SCIENCE ENRICHMENT (Ilona Kusnierz)
Science Enrichment brings fun, first hand science experiences to our school. Program topics are introduced to grades K-8 with high-energy assembly presentations and are adapted for the grade level of the participants. Adult volunteers assist the demonstrator by guiding the students through hands-on activities that build upon the topics introduced in the assembly.
• SCIENCE FAIR/CELEBRATE SCIENCE DAY
This event offers all students the opportunity to enjoy and explore science. On a designated day, science experiments are demonstrated by parent volunteers to grades 1 & 2. Grades 3-5 may display home-created projects or science experiments for school-wide viewing. Grades 6-8 participate in the after school fair with experiments structured on the scientific method. These projects will be formally judged. Prizes and ribbons are awarded to the top entries.
• CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK LUNCH/BAKE SALE (Erin Fullerton)
The PTA organizes the bake sale at the lunch. Volunteers are needed to supply bake goods and work the sale.
• SPIRITWEAR (Carolyn Schwettman)
PTA offers a variety of GA Spirit Wear. Watch for new and expanding lines throughout the school year. Our reps and the apparel will be at many of the Guardian Angels events!
• TARGET TAKE CHARGE OF EDUCATION (Gina Hopple)
Target credit card holders can enroll in the Take Charge of Education program and designate Guardian Angels as your school. A donation check is then distributed to our school once per year based on the total dollar amount of purchases made by participating card members. Visit www.target.com/tcoe to enroll your card today!
• TEACHERS’ LUNCHEONS and TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK (Bridget Fesenmeier)
Three times a year the PTA sponsors luncheons for our teachers as a show of thanks and appreciation. These luncheons include: a Back-To-School Lunch, a Catholic Schools Week Lunch and an Appreciation Lunch during GA’s Teacher Appreciation Week in the spring. Volunteer cooks and bakers are needed for all three lunches and for help with setup/ clean up.
• TEACHERS’ WISH LIST/GENERAL REIMBURSEMENTS/CONTINUING EDUCATION
We ask the teachers to provide Mr Kenney with their “wish lists”. The PTA then works to fill as many of these requests as possible. In addition, we provide funds to reimburse teachers for general classroom supplies each year. The PTA also provides funds that are put towards teachers’ continuing education classes and seminars.
• TRIVIA NIGHT (Cindy Sizemore, Debbie Osterfeld, Michele O’Rourke)
This social event is guaranteed to be a fun-filled night of entertainment. Mirrored on the original Trivial Pursuit you will be challenged to a variety of questions including some of our own local trivia. Volunteers will be needed to set up, act as runners the night of, and help with clean up.
• USED UNIFORM SALE/EXCHANGE (Maureen Baker)
The PTA collects used, outgrown uniforms from GA families, then offers them “on consignment” and returns the proceeds to the seller. The PTA will hold used-uniform sales throughout the first half of the school year. After Christmas Break, all unsold items will transfer to an exchange closet where GA families can leave items they no longer need, and pick-up items that they do need.
• VOLUNTEER PRAYER SERVICE AND BREAKFAST (Amy Obermeyer)
Volunteers are honored each year in the spring at a prayer service and breakfast. This social is the PTA’s way of thanking these very important volunteers for their time and efforts throughout the year. Please join us for mass followed by a delicious breakfast in honor of every volunteer.
OTHER PROGRAMS
The following are other programs that are very valuable to the school but are not PTA sponsored.
• ATHLETIC BOOSTERS (Mike Smith)
The Boosters sponsor the athletic programs for boys and girls. This includes football, basketball, baseball and volleyball for boys; volleyball, basketball, and softball for girls; and golf teams for junior high students. A fee of $30.00 per family helps to cover the cost of athletic equipment for physical education classes. The funds also help to defray expenses of school-sponsored C.Y.O. teams for grades 3-8. Participation in CYO sports is open to all GA students and children of parishioners. Refer to the Athletic Boosters Handbook for additional information.
• DRAMA CLUB
The Drama Club consists of 5th through 8th grade students. A musical or drama is presented each year. The program is entirely after school and voluntary. Parent volunteers are needed to paint sets, help with the production, sell tickets and to assist as stage hands.
• LENTEN MISSIONS (Becky Schen)
Money is collected during Lent for various missions. Volunteers are needed to count money every Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. or Noon. You may volunteer once or as many times as you wish.
• MAGAZINE DRIVE (Sally Norman)
The magazine drive is held each September. New subscriptions and renewals are offered at money-saving prices. Volunteers are needed for the duration of the drive to help process the orders and to help the students redeem their sales prizes. Profits from this important fundraiser go directly to the operating budget of our school.
• MUSIC BOOSTERS (Pam Beck)
The Music Boosters is a volunteer organization which supports the entire K-8 Music Program at Guardian Angels. This includes support of the general music program, Chorus, Beginning Band, and the GA Band. The Music Boosters supply financial and volunteer help for the Christmas and the Spring Concerts as well as extracurricular programs. As well as helping the music teachers provide the extras, the Music Boosters are also available to help the students who are interested in the music program but may not have the financial resources to participate. Please contact the Music Boosters if you wish to help us or if we can help you.
• WEDNESDAY HERALD (Shannon Kapp)
The Herald is the primary communication vehicle between parents and the school and is sent as electronic communication every Wednesday.
